Colitis

Def:

Colitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the colon, which is also known as the large intestine.

Etiology:

  • Inflammatory
    • Inflammatory bowel disease
      • Crohn disease
      • Ulcerative Colitis
    • Appendicitis
  • Infectious
    • Necrotizing enterocolitis
    • Toxic megacolon
    • Clostridium enterocolitis
  • Ischemic
    • Acute mesenteric ischemia
    • Chronic mesenteric ischemia
    • Colonic ischemia

Inflammatory:

  1. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): This is a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive tract. It includes two main subtypes:

  • Crohn's Disease: A type of IBD that can affect any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus.

  • Ulcerative Colitis: Another form of IBD that primarily affects the colon and rectum, leading to ulcers in the colon's lining.

  1. Appendicitis: Although it primarily involves inflammation of the appendix, it falls under the inflammatory category because it's an acute inflammatory condition.

Infectious:

  1. Necrotizing Enterocolitis: This is an inflammatory condition of the intestines that primarily affects premature infants and is often associated with bacterial infection.

  1. Toxic Megacolon: This is a complication of various inflammatory conditions, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, where the colon becomes severely distended and inflamed.

  1. Clostridium Enterocolitis: This condition is caused by an infection with the bacterium Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) and results in inflammation of the colon.

Ischemic:

  1. Acute Mesenteric Ischemia: This condition arises from a sudden decrease in blood flow to the intestines, typically due to blood clots or blocked arteries. It is categorized as ischemic because it involves inadequate blood supply leading to tissue damage.

  1. Chronic Mesenteric Ischemia: This is a chronic condition resulting from long-term inadequate blood supply to the intestines, often caused by atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries).

  2. Colonic Ischemia: This condition specifically involves inadequate blood supply to the colon, which can lead to inflammation and damage to the colonic tissue.
